Have you heard about Ashitaba?
Ashitaba (also know as Angelica Keiskei) is a native Japanese apiaceous plant that has its origin on Hachijo Island, Japan. The inhabitants of Hachijo Island are well known for their longevity and good health.
Ashitaba has been an integral part of their diet for hundreds of years. It has been taken as health food and also utilized as medical herb. Ashitaba means “Tomorrow Leaf” in Japanese. Its vital life force is so strong that it is believed to grow new leaf tomorrow if you were to pick one of its leaves today. Due to its rich nutrition and remarkable healing effects, Ashitaba gained its fine reputation as longevity grass.
Ashitaba Nutrition Data Comparison
Comparing to other vegetables, Ashitaba is nutritionally very well-balanced and especially abundant in fiber, β-Carotene and potassium in addition to protein and each mineral/vitamin.
Our Ashitaba powder is dehydrated carefully at low temperature to prevent loss in nutrition. Comparing to raw Ashitaba leaves, a smaller amount of Ashitaba powder enables the intake of necessary nutrients.
Vitamin B12
Most plants are completely lacking in vitamin B12, which is normally only obtainable through meat, fish and eggs. However, Ashitaba is a good source of this important nutrient, making it an ideal supplement for strict vegans and vegetarians, who omit these foods from their diets and are at risk of suffering from a deficiency. A shortage of vitamin B12 can cause serious cognitive and nervous system problems, in addition to increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and pernicious anaemia.
Therapeutic Compounds in Ashitaba
Researchers believe that Ashitaba is effective against many medical problems as a result of the synergistic action of its various active compounds. In addition to the vitamins and minerals it contains, Ashitaba also possesses nutrients, which also have specific health-related benefits.
Chalcones
Ashitaba contains a sticky yellow sap, not found in other plants known as chalcones, which are polyphenol compounds unique to Ashitaba. Chalcones in Ashitaba, mainly consisting of Xanthoangelol and 4-hydroxyderricin, has several beneficial bioactive effects, such as a antibacterial effect, an antitumour effect and an effect on lipid metabolism (inhibition of fat accumulation and enhancement of fat burning). Chalcones are potent anti-oxidants which help to protect our organs from destructive free radicals and slow down aging. Research published in the September 2002 issues of Nutraceutical World, shown that Ashitaba out-performed a range of herbs including green tea, dandelion, fennel, black tea, chamomile, Saint Johns Wort and sage for its antioxidant potential.
Germanium
This trace mineral has been found to stimulate the body’s production of interferon. Its helps the immune system by boosting the activity of natural killer cells, a type of white blood cell that attacks invading germs. Dr. Otto Warburg, a Nobel Prize winning biochemist, stated that germanium helped to increase the delivery of oxygen to cells. He believed that boosting the oxygen supply to healthy cells slowed the growth of tumours.
Chlorophyll
Ashitaba is rich in chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants that collects strong energy from the sun. The molecule of chlorophyll is almost identical to hemoglobin molecule in red blood cell and is often referred as “nature’s blood”. Besides the ability to stimulate the production of red blood cells, it is also an excellent agent for cleansing the blood and liver and promotes the growth of friendly bacteria in the digestive tract.
