KSM-66™ Organic Ashwagandha Extract
Ashwagandha is one of the most popular Indian botanical plants which has been used in Ayurveda – the 5000-year-old Indian system of medicine, as a rejuvenative, and a daily tonic for many centuries. Ashwagandha embodies the very essence of a preventative and curative approach to health in Ayurveda.
KSM-66™ Organic Ashwagandha Extract is a premium, full-spectrum extract produced using a unique proprietary extraction process without using alcohol or any other chemical solvent. KSM-66™ is standardized to contain at least 5% withanolides.
Ashwagandha contains many useful phytochemical constituents, including steroidal lactones such as withanolides, alkaloids, flavonoids, fatty acids, choline, and amino acids. These key phytochemical constituents of Ashwagandha endow it with its unique medicinal properties and makes it extremely beneficial to the consumer and progressively affects various systems in our body. Withanolides are an essential set of the key bioactive components of Ashwagandha.
KSM-66™ Relieves Stress & Anxiety
In today’s world, chronic stress affects contemporary society and stress is often associated with an increase in serum cortisol level in our body. Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen which means that it helps the body to adapt to stress inducing conditions, by decreasing the inflammation and infection and by modulating adrenal hormones and neurotransmitters.
Chronic stress related conditions such as hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, sexual dysfunction, immunosuppression and mental depression were also found to be mediated through the use of Ashwagandha. Several randomized and controlled human studies have shown that Ashwagandha can not only reduce symptoms in people with stress and anxiety disorders, but also improve general well-being.
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted at Asha Hospital, Hyderabad, India. A total of 64 healthy adults received 300 mg twice daily of ashwagandha (as KSM-66TM) for eight weeks. Efficacy measured using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) score, serum cortisol level, General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) score, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) score.
It was found that consuming Ashwagandha root extract for 8 weeks had led to a significant reduction in the level of serum cortisol resulting in a reduction in stress. Researchers concluded that high concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract improves an individual’s resistance toward stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.
KSM-66™ Improves Sleep Quality
Sleep is as critical to good health as food and water. Research associates poor sleep with numerous health conditions, including stress, hormone and blood-sugar issues that can cascade into illness. Quality sleep supports our mental and physical performance. It impacts our immune system. For centuries, Ashwagandha has been recommended for sleep, owing to its sleep inducing potential.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled 2019 study using KSM-66TM Ashawagandha extract, sleep challenged subjects who received 300mg of ashwagandha twice daily for 10 weeks showed:
- Significantly shorter time falling asleep
- Significant improvement in sleep efficiency
- Significant improvement in sleep quality
- Significant calming effects, reduced nervousness
- Significant increase in mental alertness
- Significant improvement in quality of life
Ashwagandha root extract is a natural compound with sleep-inducing potential, well tolerated and improves sleep quality and sleep onset latency in patients with trouble sleeping. The outcome also showed significant improvement of sleep condition, mental alertness, and quality of life in elderly participants. Therefore, ashwagandha root extract could be an acceptable and admirable alternative supplement in improving various age-related health issues and may boost overall general well-being in an elderly person.
KSM-66™ Improves Memory & Cognitive Function
Historically, Ashwagandha has also been categorized as a nootropic herb in Ayurveda to promote cognition in children with memory deficits, and for memory loss in aging adults. Ashwagandha is known to enhance brain function, response times, memory, concentration capacity, and task performance capability. Many studies demonstrate how alkaloids from Ashwagandha help nerve regeneration, boost neural growth in both humans and animals; but the evidence in humans is very limited.
A study was carried out in 50 adults with mild cognitive impairment, a common precursor of Alzheimer’s disease, who received twice daily over 8 weeks of Ashwagandha root extract 300 mg. The research confirms its traditional use to enhance memory. In another research of 53 individuals with bipolar disorder, ashwagandha extract also augmented working memory.
Ashwagandha has also been found to aid in the control of the symptoms of obsessive- compulsive disorder. Ashwagandha is also highly effective in reducing the reaction time and improving attention spans in those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Researchers concluded that Ashwagandha can be effective in improving immediate memory and general memory, and in improving executive function, attention and information processing speed without any side effects.
Lemon Balm Extract – A Natural Nootropic
Lemon balm is a perennial herb from the mint family. The leaves, which have a mild lemon aroma, are used to make traditional medicine. Lemon balm is traditionally used for anxiety, stress, insomnia, indigestion, dementia, and many other conditions. Lemon balm contains a chemical compound called rosmarinic acid that has a sedative, calming effect. A good lemon balm extract should contain at least 5% of rosmarinic acid.
Rosmarinic Acid Increases GABA & Acetylcholine
Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a naturally occurring amino acid that works as a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) in your brain. GABA blocks, or inhibits, certain brain signals and decreases activity in your nervous system. When GABA attaches to a protein in your brain known as a GABA receptor, it produces a calming effect. This can help with feelings of anxiety, stress, and fear. Our brain also naturally releases GABA at the end of a day to promote sleepiness and allow a person to rest.
Studies showed that the traditional relaxing effects may be linked to elevated levels of the neurotransmitter GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) by inhibiting GABA-transaminase (GABA T), an enzyme that degrades GABA. Rosmarinic acid is responsible for this effect.
Acetylcholine is a molecule that also functions as a neurotransmitter in your body. This means it relays messages from your brain to your body through nerve cells. Studies have shown that low acetylcholine levels have been linked to learning and memory impairments, as well as brain disorders, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
It is also known that rosmarinic acid is able to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which degrades the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
Lemon Balm Extract Reduces Stress & Promotes Good Sleep
Lemon balm extract has been scientifically substantiated with human study results. The main human study was conducted by Prof. Scholey of the Brain Science Institute, Swinburne University, Australia. This clinical study evaluated the effects of the lemon balm extract on cognitive performance under mild stress, comparable with a general multitasking environment (which most people experience every day). The investigation included parameters to evaluate cognitive performance, physiological reaction of stress and mood. It was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, balanced-crossover, monocentric study involving 25 healthy people.
The study results demonstrated that, 1 hour after consuming a 300 mg dosage, significant beneficial effects on alertness, working memory and word recall, cortisol levels reduction as a marker for stress and reduced anxiety could be detected. The effects were still measurable 3 hours after intake.
When cortisol levels are high our body cannot relax and sleep well. During sleep, reduced cortisol levels after consuming lemon balm extract enables the release of the human growth hormone (GH) which is essential for muscle repair and muscle growth-related to training adaptation. Sleep is the longest fat-burning phase of the day, allowing the body to lower blood sugar and to refuel the brain and muscle with sugar, energy.
